News Roundup January 22nd

Nintendo showing more indie titles tomorrow, Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire getting a turn-based mode, Realm Royale now free-to-play as an open beta, HITMAN 2 adds a winter event, and new releases for the week.

Maybe a surprise or two

It will not be a full direct but Nintendo will be hosting an Indie Highlights video showcase tomorrow. Even though this news was tweeted out by the Nintendo of Europe Twitter account, it is hard to imagine that the games shown will not come to the North American region as well.

Other royales to tackle

Even as Fortnite continues to dominate the space, Hi-Rez is continuing to go forward with their interpretation on battle royale. Just exiting alpha on PC, Realm Royale is now available to play on the PS4, Xbox One, and PC as an open-beta. Like Paladins and Smite before it, Realm Royale is free-to-play so don’t be shy if you want to give this a try.

My you look different

A new update to Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire changes the game up, literally. On January 24th when the update hits, it will add a turn-based mode to Obsidian’s RPG. Considering that the normal gameplay involves quick decisions based on its real-time strategy format, this allows the sequel to be played in a much different fashion.

You might expect something closer to Divinity: Original Sin with this jump to a turn-based format. The question now becomes does this raise the sales for Pillars of Eternity II with something more resembling a popular title? More details about this new mode can be found in the article at PCGamesn.

Baby its cold outside…

The holiday season might be behind us but that doesn’t mean the cold chill of winter left as well. Perhaps this was great timing on IO’s part as they have introduced a new event for HITMAN 2, Snow Festival.

As this event takes place on a map from Season 1, Hokkaido, there are a few differences. One, those who own the Legacy Pack in HITMAN 2 have immediate access to Hokkaido, the Snow Event, and the ability to unlock the Ice Pick and Snow Festival Suit permanently.

Also starting today, a free trial can be downloaded and played until the event ends on February 12th no matter if you own the game or not. Progress made during this event will carry over to the main game.

IO has kept quiet about what will be in the game’s Expansion Pass but this new event reveals the first item, the Winter Sports Pack. In this pack, which is not being sold separately at the moment, contains two weapons (Piton and Quickdraw) a winter sports suit, an artic tool box, and a snowball that acts just how you would expect it to. Not that a snowball will become Agent 47’s next great stealth item but it should make for some laughs.
