Major Nelson drops the list of free games for October's Games with Gold on his blog today. Xbox One owners will be getting Valiant Hearts: The Great War all month, and The Walking Dead: The Complete First Season from October 16th through November 15th. Xbox 360 Games With Gold are Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes from October 1st through the 15th, then switching to The Walking Dead: The Complete First Season for October 15th to the 31st. Just in time for Halloween!
As if the Xbox Games with Gold would not be keeping you busy enough this October, today EA announced that the Star Wars Battlefront beta will run from the 8th through the 12th of October. Here are the three modes that will be in this beta:
- Walker Assault on Hoth: Fight in epic 40-player battles as a Rebel to destroy the Empire’s onslaught of AT-AT’s by calling in Y-wing bombers. Or, side with the Empire and protect your walkers while utilizing their mighty weaponry to crush the Rebel objective.
- Drop Zone on Sullust: Escape pods are crashing down and you and your team must fight to control them. With its frantic 8v8 matches, Drop Zone is sure to put your combat and strategy skills to the test.
- Survival Mission on Tatooine: Play alone or with a friend via co-op or split-screen as you battle to hold off waves of Imperial forces including AT-ST’s, TIE fighters, elite stormtroopers and more.
On top of that there will be a Star Wars Battlefront Companion experience, only available for the duration of the beta. Available at www.StarWarsBattlefront.com, you can play the strategic card game, Base Command, to earn in-game credits. You can then use those credits to unlock Star Cards, weapons, and more for in-game use. This Companion app of sorts also will let you check game stats and progression, customize your load-outs and appearance, and connect with friends.
Also announced today was that Minecraft is heading to the Oculus Store this spring. The Rift currently does not have a release date either, but is also slated to launch in early 2016. With a massively popular title like Minecraft near the projected launch time of the Rift, it could provide the push that can take the hardware to a big success. While it is not real shocking that Minecraft is coming to the Oculus Store, it is still nice to see Minecraft make it to the VR space.
Powered by Oculus technology, the Samsung Gear VR headset is set to launch this November. Gear VR hopes to make noise this Black Friday, priced at only $99. Compatible with Samsung's 2015 flagship phones, namely the S6 line and Note 5, they are loading in the features. Now 22 percent lighter, the Gear VR is packing in hefty apps that might entice the average consumer. Featuring Netflix, Hulu, Vimeo, Twitch, Facebook, Lionsgate, the Oculus Arcade which offers classic games from Bandai Namco and Sega, and over 100 films from Fox in the Oculus Cinema app. That is quite the line-up to get things started this holiday season!
Gear VR will not go uncontested for this holiday's top gadget; Pebble smartwathces announced their next device. The Pebble Time Round is their new, circular faced smartwatch coming this November. With a discrete, always on e-paper display, they are going for a more custom experience for their users. The Pebble Time Round offers interchangeable bands and materials in both 20mm or 14mm, several different watch finishes (Black, Silver, or a special-edition Rose Gold exclusively for the 14mm band size), and alternate watch displays from the app store. Weighing in at only 28 grams and 7.5mm thin, they claim this to be "the thinnest and lightest smartwatch in the world". More impressively, it will have a battery that lasts for days, and recharges in as little as 15 minutes. Pebble Time Round will start at $249 and available at Pebble.com, Best Buy, Target, and Amazon.
Speaking of Amazon, you can nab their Prime service for only $67 instead of $100 this Friday. They are offering this discount to new members for only 24 hours, starting at midnight on September 25th. This is in celebration of the five Emmy's their original series, Transparent, received at the 67th annual Emmy Awards (we see what you did there).
Also making waves in broadcast is TBS, starting a weekly eSport league competition to air on Friday nights. The first competition will center around Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, over the course of two, 10-week tournaments. There will be regular-season matches, playoffs, and a championship throughout the year. During these matches there will be companion content to go along, such as behind-the-scenes and player profiles in its Team Stream app.
