there is a release date for the retron 5. for some, june 6th can't come quick enough. for others, they grew weary of the wait. paired with the price increase to $139.99, this system has been a roller coaster ride for almost a year now, with missed launch windows and changes a muck. a lot of these (potentially former) consumers are quite vocal on both the hyperkin facebook page and on amazon.com reviews. it's too much too late for some, and they have sworn off the console.
nonetheless the retron 5 is finally out now, and the prices have been all over the map. hyperkin's website has a msrp of $139.99 but there has been prices up to $499.99 from retailers due to low supply and high demand. this is unfortunately more fuel added to the fire of the troubled story of this console. it is doubtful that these prices will stick around for long, but waiting even longer than you already have for the price to come back down is quite infuriating.
there is also a sku for individual controllers for purchase at a msrp of $39.99. this era of gaming can be considered one of the greatest for couch co-op, so the additional controller is a welcomed addition. hyperkin has confirmed four player local play, so these may come in handy for having friends over. these are also available in matching gray and black colors to pair nicely with your console.
the retron 4 was announced on march 5th, 2013 (as seen here), but it was quickly changed to the retron 5 only 19 days later it was changed to the retron 5 (also seen here). the system was projected for the summer of 2013, but it never delivered. the most notable missed mark was the december 10th release. from there, subsequent tremors of more delays and even a price increase has kept the ground shaky with consumers.
we are excited to finally play the classics in HD, but are you still in the buying mood now that the console is finally out? let us know in the comments bellow if you are picking up a retron 5 or not on june 6th
