Primal Carnage: Extinction just launched on the Playstation 4 on October 20th. With the recent release of PC:E, we got the opportunity to ask Circle 5 Studios and Panic Button a few questions. They tell us there will be a "hefty amount" of upcoming DLC for Primal Carnage: Extinction, about the path Primal Carnage: Extinction took to getting on the PS4, and Panic Button's future plans as a studio. Here's what they had to say:
Q: For those unfamiliar, what are some of the key changes/improvements from the original Primal Carnage?
A: While preparing the game for PS4, we made changes or implemented systems to take advantage of the console, and console gameplay. This included replacing the dedicated server model with a Client-hosted model (so any PS4 can start and host a game), implementing an Unlock System that rewards players for online matches and earning Trophies, adding online and LAN multiplayer options, and adding some custom support for the the DualShock 4 light bar and the PS Vita Remote Play functionality.
We added in Circle 5's "Survival Mode", which is a people-versus-wave-after-wave-of-AI-dinos new to the franchise.
We also did a lot of "behind the scenes" work like updating the engine, updating to recent console SDK versions, console compliance work, enabling for additional content, and the like.
Q: What was the path like for getting Primal Carnage: Extinction on the PlayStation 4?
A: Part of Panic Button's goal as a studio is to help smaller independent studios get their games onto platforms they can't otherwise reach. Maybe those studios don't have the technical or certification expertise, or the relationships, or the funding, or have some other blockers that keep them from bringing their game to particular gamers they want to reach.
Members of the Circle 5 and Panic Button teams have been talking at various industry events for a while, like each other at a personal level, and were looking for a project that made sense to do together.
When Circle 5 wanted to bring Primal Carnage: Extinction to the PS4, it lined up with Panic Button's expertise and availability, so we offered to help with the PS4 platform side of development.
Q: Any plans for bringing Primal Carnage: Extinction to other consoles in the future?
A: Circle 5 is thrilled to bring the Primal Carnage brand to the PS4 platform. We're still focusing on the PS4 version for the PlayStation community before looking at other platforms.
Q: Primal Carnage has nine pieces of DLC, about how many do you have planned for Primal Carnage: Extinction?
A: We will be announcing DLC plans soon, but there is a hefty amount of DLC planned for PlayStation 4 over the next several months.
Q: What is in the future for both Circle 5 Studios and Panic Button? Panic Button has a large spectrum of games in their portfolio, where they also mention two TBA projects for 2016. When can we expect to hear more about these properties?
A: Speaking just for the Panic Button side, we do a broad range of work, from co-development on properties like Disney Infinity, to our own internal games, to helping smaller independent titles make the move to other platforms. Expect to hear quite a bit from us in the coming months.
Unfortunately no details were provided for the upcoming DLC, but rather they will be "announcing DLC plans soon". As soon as we learn anything about the expansions coming to Primal Carnage: Extinction, expect it to get reported here at tag in our news.
We are also quite interested in Panic Button's future projects, with two TBA projects listed on their site. Quote "Expect to hear quite a bit from us in the coming months." Panic Button has been a part of so many different, diverse gaming experiences, who knows what they could be.
